The modern history of Poland in the post-Solidarity era is marked by dramatic political changes. It has been a time of transitioning from centuries of foreign domination and economic decline to a self-governing independent state with a free market system.
The agreement between the communist-dominated government of Poland and leaders of the Solidarity movement in 1989 provided for local self-government, national policies to promote full employment for workers and government recognition of independent trade unions. Elections to fill seats in the national assembly left the country in political turmoil under the leadership of a prime minister.
In the summer of 1989, changes to Poland’s constitution created the office of president to fill the leadership role in the country. Solidarity leaders reluctantly supported the election of a communist to the presidency by a vote of the Polish National Assembly. Shortly after taking office, the country’s new president asked a Solidarity leader, Tadeusz Mazowiecki to form a new government.
Mazowiecki was approved by the National Assembly as the new prime minister along with his cabinet. The Mazowiecki government went to work implementing widespread reforms in the economic and political structure of Poland. 1989 marked the first time since World War II that Poland was ruled by a government that was not made up of communists. In keeping with the non-violent and conciliatory ways of the Solidarity movement, Prime Minister Mazowiecki prohibited retaliation against or exclusion of communists who previously held office.
Other reforms under the Mazowiecki government included the transition of the economy to a free-market system and the elimination of government recognition of the communist party’s role as the leading party in the country. Lech Walesa was elected as president in 1990 in an election that marked the first time a Polish president was elected by popular vote. The following year marked the first free elections to choose members of parliament.
The political and economic reforms within the country that included the adoption of a new constitution were welcomed by other nations in the region. NATO opened its doors to Poland in 1999 by making it a member of that organization. Subsequent to joining NATO, Polish military units participated along with armed forces from other nations in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The economy of Poland in the post-World War II era suffered from high unemployment rates that, at times, reached 20 percent. In 2004, Poland was invited to join the European Union. The ability of Polish workers to seek work in European labor markets dramatically improved the country’s unemployment rate. Because of its new economic position, the 2008 worldwide economic crisis did not affect Poland as much as it did most other European nations.
